Residents of the Maradu apartments will be served evacuation notices soon.
A meeting of the Maradu municipal council, to be held tomorrow at 10.30 a.m., will take a decision. The State government had on Sunday asked the local body to serve the notices and plan evacuation and rehabilitation measures in the wake of strictures of the Supreme Court.
The court had asked the State government on September 6 to complete the demolition of the four building complexes, which came up in violation of the Coastal Regulation Zone guidelines, by September 20 and report back when the court takes up the case on September 23. Meanwhile, Holy Faith H2O apartment witnessed emotional scenes on Monday afternoon when Chief Secretary Tom Jose visited the apartment complex.
A few women sat on the entrance to the apartment complexes holding placards seeking steps to save their homes. Worry was writ large on their faces as they stared at the immediate possibility of losing their homes.
The team of officials, including Collector S. Suhas, went around the building to take a look at the stricture.
As the officials returned a few residents mobbed them asking for a hearing.
No court or government can take any drastic measures such as demolition of the building without hearing the affected parties, they shouted.
However, the officials refused to respond to the residents.
“I came to visit the site and to implement the Supreme Court verdict. I just wanted to see the place,” said Mr. Jose, when asked about the steps the administration proposed to take while implementing the apex court verdict.
Policemen escorted the officials out of the building even as the residents continued to shout slogans.
The officials also visited Golden Kayaloram, another apartment listed for demolition.
Meeting held
Earlier, Mr. Jose held a meeting with civic representatives of the Maradu municipality and the district administration.
Responding to the developments, T.H. Nadeera, chairperson of the municipality, said the authorities offered support for implementing the apex court verdict.
