Managing canals with participation of public

May 16, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:44 am IST - ALAPPUZHA:

The district administration has decided to undertake the management of canals in Alappuzha town by ensuring the active participation of the public and various organisations.

A meeting that was convened by K.C. Venugopal, MP, at the District Collectorate on Friday decided to entrust the management of Commercial Canal, Vada Canal and Link Canal — the beautification works of all of which were nearing completion — to certain organisations.

Besides the members of the public, media establishments, voluntary groups, public institutions, cultural organisations, residents’ associations, educational institutions, student police cadets, police personnel, banks and religious organisations would be roped in for the activity, Mr. Venugopal said.

The activities would be coordinated by the District Tourism Promotion Council and the Alappuzha Canal Management Society.

As per the plan, the canal stretches, ranging from 200 m to 500 m, would be entrusted with the voluntary groups for management. Information boards stating the details of the project would be put up at various points. According to Mr. Venugopal, the project aimed at cultivating the feeling that every members of the public had equal responsibility to maintain canals as well as other public properties.

According to official sources, several organisations and establishments have conveyed their interest in being part of the programme. Certain residents’ associations, commercial establishments and voluntary organisations such as the YMCA would undertake sanitation activities in the areas allotted to them.

Those interested in involving themselves with the canal maintenance project have been requested to inform the District Collector within a week.
