A bullet gas tanker carrying liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) from Mangalore overturned on the National Highway at Kallyassery here in the early hours of Wednesday.

The tanker of Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) overturned at around 7 a.m. near the Kallyassery High School. Immediately after the incident, fire tenders rushed to the spot.

No leakage

As there was no leakage from the tanker, residents living in the area were not evacuated. By late afternoon, the overturned tanker was lifted by a crane and was put on its wheels, an official said. Experts of the IOC from Mangalore oversaw the lifting of the tanker. The tanker would be attached to a new driver’s cabin on Friday morning to take it to Kozhikode, the official said.

The driver and the cleaner of the tanker suffered minor injuries in the mishap. They have been admitted to hospital here. The tanker overturned close to a spot where an IOC LPG tanker had overturned on January 14, 2014 and caught fire, forcing the authorities to evacuate the residents.

The official said that the tanker overturned on Wednesday apparently due to its axle getting broken. He said the police and Fire and Rescue Service personnel were deployed in the area immediately after the tanker overturned.

As there was no leakage of gas, there was no need for emptying the LPG from the overturned tanker to another one, he said.
