Crackers for the Thrissur Pooram fireworks will be made without pottasium chlorite. The Pooram will be conducted with the latest security arrangements in place, Agriculture Minister V.S. Sunil Kumar has said.

He was speaking at a Pooram review meeting chaired here on Wednesday by Tourism Minister A.C. Moideen. There would be no ban on any type of crackers; but there would be a bar on certain chemicals used to make them.

Crackers could be made with chemicals that are less potent. Crackers such as ‘amittu’ or ‘kuzhhiminnal’ can be used with prior government approval. The licence for their use could be received in a week.

A high-volume long-range system would be put in place for dousing fires. Special barricades would be put up as part of security measures. Those handling fireworks would be given luminous jackets. A quick-match-fuse system would also be used to combat flames, the Minister added.
