KVASU to launch scholarship programme

June 12, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:43 am IST - KALPETTA:

A meeting of the Board of Management of the Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (KVASU) held here recently decided to execute a unique student scholarship programme for students to be admitted to the Bachelor of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry and B.Tech. Dairy Science and Technology courses during the academic year 2015-16.

A frame work for University Student Scholarship Fund (USSF) is proposed with methods of collection and disbursal of scholarships to those who are genuinely in need, K. Devada, Director of Academics and Research, KVASU, told The Hindu .

Base fee

A Base Semester Fees (BSF) will be evolved based on the average income level of the students admitted to the above university courses. Based on the family income level, there will be four categories of students — those with an annual family income below Rs.1 lakh; income between Rs.1 lakh and Rs.2 lakh; between Rs.2 lakh and Rs.3 lakh; and an income above Rs.3 lakh, Dr. Devada said.

The first category will get 100 per cent concession in tuition fee; the second, 75 per cent; and the third, 50 per cent.

Those in the fourth category will be eligible for KVASU’s merit scholarships based on academic performance.

Income level

The income level of parents of the students has to be certified by a competent revenue authority upon admission.

Those getting any other scholarship sanctioned by the State government, wherein full tuition fee is being waived, will not be eligible for this scholarship.

Those students who get scholarships in the form of maintenance expenses such as mess reimbursement shall be eligible for the scheme. “A periodic revision of tuition fees has to be conducted by the university and there will always be an issue of affordability of the course fees for lower-income groups. The increase in fees need not impose undue burden on those belonging to these groups,” Dr. Devada pointed out.
