KVASU to freeze fee structure hike

June 21, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:46 am IST - KALPETTA:

The Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (KVASU) decided to freeze the recent hike in fee structure following discussions with students’ representatives at the university headquarters on Friday, the KVASU Registrar said in a release here on Saturday.

The university had introduced a student scholarship and support fund, based on family income levels.

Recently, it proposed to increase tuition fee for the upper income group so as to give 50 to 100 per cent tuition fee waiver scholarship for students in the lower income group, he said.

Tuition fee for students with family income over Rs.3 lakh was increased accordingly.

However, the students said they did not require university scholarships funds since government scholarships were already available. Hence, the fee structure would be finalised at a meeting of the management board to be held on July 8, the Registrar added.

SFI stance

But P.P. Vaishakh, convener, SFI, KVASU subcommittee, said they would continue the indefinite hunger strike, launched three days ago at the KVASU headquarters, till the university granted their demands.

The organisation had sought revoking of the fee hike, and not freezing of the decision, he said.
