The Kerala Social Security Mission (KSSM) will organise a get-together of senior citizens to observe International Day of Older Persons here on October 1.

Addressing presspersons here on Thursday, T.P. Ashraf, KSSM governing body member, said Health Minister Adoor Prakash would inaugurate the event being organised as part of the ‘Vayomithram' scheme for the welfare of elderly people.

The programme would witness the launch of a special helpline for senior citizens. Initially, it would benefit only those residing within the city limits, he said.

The KSSM, formed by the State government in 2008, had implemented eight schemes for the welfare of women and children. “The upcoming Vayomithram project would play a key role in empowering the neglected elders in our society,” he said.

Dr. Ashraf said the KSSM would introduce a special scheme titled ‘Paripalanam' under the ‘Vayomithram' scheme for providing day-care facility for the aged citizens. With the launch of the scheme, the beneficiaries would be able to access free medical service, he said.

As per the figures released by the KSSM, altogether 1,762 children had so far benefitted from a cancer treatment project pioneered by the Mission spending Rs.7.18 crore across the State. The ‘Thalolam' treatment project too could cover over 2,287 children in the State at a cost of Rs.3.22 crore.

KSSM Regional Director T.K. Yunus, and project coordinators A. Baiju and Mili Mathew were present at the press conference.
