The Government Medical College Hospital at Gandhinagar, one of the oldest in the State, is on path of rapid development, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has said.
Inaugurating the Rs.10.39-crore critical care unit at the medical college, Mr. Chandy said a new cath lab, CT scan centre and MRI scan centre would come up at the medical college soon. “Cardiothoracic and Nephrology Department at the medical college would stand up to any of the best departments in the country,” he said. A new dialysis centre with 30 machines has been sanctioned for the hospital. Another 10 machines would be provided under the Karunya Benevolent Scheme, he said.
He said his government had been giving top priority for the public health sector and had sanctioned 11 new medical colleges despite the huge financial liability on the government.
The government would like to implement various schemes, which would provide free treatment to more people, he said.
Health Minister V.S. Sivakumar in his presidential address said the government had envisaged developmental works worth Rs. 150 crore for the medical college by including it in the Prime Minister’s Development Fund. This included a Rs.120-crore Central aid and a State share of Rs.30 crore, he said.
“Development projects worth Rs. 400 crore are being taken up at the government medical colleges in the State,” he said. Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, Minister for Transport and Forests, K.C. Joseph, Minister for Rural Development, Jose.K. Mani, MP, K. Suresh Kurup, MLA and others spoke.
