June 18, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:38 am IST - KOLLAM:

Éducational scholarships will be launched from this year by the Kolping Quilon, the Kollam chapter of the social assistance organisation International Kolping Society (IKS), for the children of its members who register outstanding performance in the SSLC and Plus 2 examinations.

The decision was taken by the Kollam Bishop Stanley Roman, who is the patron of Kolping Quilon, which functions as a wing of the Quilon Social Service Society, the charity wing of the Kollam Latin Catholic Diocese. Dr. Roman said Kolping Quilon worked under the regulations of the IKS.

The scholarships will be formally launched by Fr. Antony Raj, India director of the IKS, at a function to be held here on June 26. Director of Kolping Quilon, Fr. Pious Malliar, said the society had 48 units under Kollam diocese comprising almost 1,000 members.

The scholarship is instituted in memory of K.J. Yohannan, the late Head of Department of Malayalam of Fatima Mata National College, who had served as project coordinator of Kolping Quilon for 21 years. The IKS was found by the Catholic priest Blessed Adoph Kolping in the 19th century in Germany.

Fr. Malliar said Kolping Quilon is engaged in helping the economically weak with development-oriented programmes. Motivating people to save their earnings is one of the core activities of the organisation.

Within a couple of months the organisation would open a working women’s hostel in Kollam, he said.
