CPI(M) State secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan has criticised the SNDP and the NSS, saying the organisations have deviated from the very principles of their founders.

He was inaugurating a two-day programme ‘EMS Smrithi’ in memory of EMS Namboodiripad, organised at the Kerala Sahitya Akademi auditorium here on Saturday.

“More than political power, the UDF has been drawing strength from the support of religious and communal forces such as the SNDP and the NSS during elections,” Mr. Balakrishnan said.

Leadership flayed

“The leadership of the SNDP and the NSS is in the hands of a few rich groups. They are the vote banks of the UDF. Under their regime, the SNDP and the NSS have deviated from the basic values and principles of Sree Narayana Guru and Mannathu Padmanabhan. The UDF always allot benefits for them to keep them in good humour.”

If the religious and communal organisations start functioning independently, the UDF will not have any power in the State, he added.

The CPI(M) has started initiatives to bring back all scattered organisations with pro-Left ideologies on a common platform, he said.

Political force

The LDF will come up as a new political force after the Aruvikkara election. The UDF calls the CPI(M) as a party that opposes development. It should point out which was the project that was scuttled by the CPI(M). The major development works such as Kannur airport and Kochi Metro were initiated during the last LDF government, he said.

The UDF was trying to strengthen the private sector at the cost of the public sector. The decision to give work of Vizhinjam seaport to the Adani Group was an example.

Vizhinjam port

“When the Vizhinjam port was initiated by the Nayanar government, the calculated cost was Rs.4,500 crore. Now it has increased to Rs.7,500 crore. Nobody has investigated the reason for the rise in the expense,” he said.

CPI(M) district secretary A.C. Moideen presided over the inaugural function.
