Efforts on to get more international airlines to run services

Officials of Kannur International Airport Ltd. (KIAL) on Tuesday held discussions with nine airline companies, including international operators, on airport services to be provided in the airport.

Talking to reporters after the meeting here, KIAL Managing Director V. Thulasidas said the discussions were mainly on the coordination between the airlines and the agencies providing the services. Representatives of SITA (Société Internationale de Télécommunications Aéronautiques), which provides common user terminal equipment (CUTE), were also present at the meeting, he added.

Representatives of airline companies, including Air India Express, Indigo, Go Air, Jet Airways, Qatar Airways, Gulf Air, Oman Airways, Fly Dubai and Air Arabia, were present at the meeting.

Mr. Thulasidas said officials of Vanderlande, the company engaged in logistic process automation, were also present. Installation of the system of self-baggage drop was discussed, he said. The officials of the airline companies were also shown the airport facilities, he added.

Hotel facilities

To a question, the MD said the airline companies raised the issue of lack of hotel facilities near the airport. Announcing that the KIAL was planning to encourage entrepreneurs to start star and budget hotels, he said there was also a plan to offer land on the airport premises to start the hotels.

He said efforts were under way by KIAL to bring more international airlines to operate from the new airport here. International operation initially would be to the Gulf sector.

Works for constructing cargo facility were already awarded, he said adding that it would be completed in one year. Temporary facility would be established till the works are completed, he informed.
