A Division Bench of the Kerala High Court on Wednesday stayed the strike called by trade unions of Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) from midnight of January 16.

A Bench headed by Chief Justice Hrishikesh Roy passed the stay order on a public interest litigation filed by Centre for Consumer Education, Pala, seeking to declare the strike illegal.

The court asked all the trade unions to participate in the conciliatory meeting called by the Labour Commissioner, Thiruvananthapuram, on January 17.

According to the petitioner, conciliation officer (Labour Commissioner) was not calling conciliation meeting based on the strike notice. The entire operation of the Corporation will come to a stand still, causing inconvenience to the general public if the KSRTC unions went on strike. The proposed strike was illegal as it was violative of the provisions of the Industrial Disputes Act.

Four unions, including those affiliated to the CITU and INTUC, had called for an indefinite strike from Wednesday night in support of their various demands.
