Hundreds of people from all walks of life on Thursday paid their last respects to A.S. Irshad, a physician from the district who was killed in the Kathmandu earthquake.

Irshad’s embalmed body was brought here from Bengaluru and buried at the Nellikkunnu Muhiyuddin Juma Masjid.

Irshad, 25, had been selected for postgraduation in medicine in an Assam institute. Irshad and his friends Deepak Thomas of Kannur and Abin Suri of Kozhikode had decided to go on a trip to Nepal to celebrate the achievement before he joined the Assam college.

While Deepak Thomas lost his life in the quake, Abin Suri is being treated at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi for serious abdominal injuries.

Those who paid floral tributes to Irshad included N.A. Nellikkunnu, MLA; municipal chairman T. E. Abdulla; District Collector Mohammed Sagir; leaders of various political parties; religious heads; and social and cultural leaders.
