Jackfruit festival to kick off today

Jackfruits are set to rule the taste buds of city residents from Friday. The Ananthapuri Chakka Mahotsavam is back at the Sooryakanthi grounds, Kanakakkunnu, with a host of mouthwatering goodies made from jackfruit.

Organised by the Jackfruit Promotion Council, the College of Agricuture at Vellayani and many other organisations with the support of the Agriculture Department, the 10-day fete will see an exhibition-cum-sale of various types of jackfruits from within and outside the State.

Jackfruits in various sizes and flavours such as ‘Then varikka,’ ‘Chembarathi varikka,’ ‘Nadan varikka,’ ‘Mullan chakka,’ ‘Koozha chakka,’ and ‘Kottu varikka’ will be the star attraction at the fete. A food court with as many as 300 jackfruit dishes will be another highlight.

Seminars, sale of jackfruit saplings, and exhibition and sale of organic products will be organised as part of the fete. Jackfruits treats imported from abroad will also be displayed.

A lunch comprising 10 types of curries made from ‘Varikka chakka’ will have dishes such as sambhar, pulisseri, parippu curry, chammanthi, chakka chilli, chakka varatti, and chakka chips.

In the evening, one can choose from a wide range of jackfruit snacks such as masala dosa, pazham pori, bhajji, mixture, ada, kottappam, chips, ullivada, jackfruit Manchurina, modakam, cutlet and so on.

A jackfruit eating contest will be among other competitions held to draw the crowds. Painting, photography, poster competitions are the other events planned. Prizes will be given away to the winners.

Visitors to the exhibition can return home with jackfruit saplings.

Minister for Agriculture V.S. Sunil Kumar will inaugurate the festival at 11 a.m. K. Muraleedharan, MLA, will preside over the function.
