Cadres angry over her comments on BJP

The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) has sacked the State president of the party’s women’s wing for praising the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Vanitha League State president Qamarunnisa Anwar was removed from the post on Saturday with party cadres mounting pressure on the IUML leadership. Vanitha League vice president K.P. Mariyumma has been appointed president.

Ms. Anwar sparked a barrage of criticism when she praised the BJP after inaugurating its fund collection drive at her house at Tirur on Thursday. Her statement to a local television channel that the BJP was growing and doing good things across the country brought severe embarrassment to the IUML, triggering protests on the social media too.

Apology

She tendered an apology to IUML State president Syed Hyderali Shihab Thangal on Friday, attributing her comments to a slip of the tongue. Although the party leadership ended the issue by accepting her apology, her remarks to some party workers later reportedly precipitated the matter. The party leadership was left red-faced on Friday night after recorded version of her comments, justifying her stance, emerged.

IUML State general secretary, in a statement here on Saturday, said that Ms. Anwar had continued to stick on her stance on the BJP even after tendering apology.
