A recent inter-church council held at the Mar Thoma Church headquarters at Thiruvalla has warned of a collective offensive against the government’s alleged invasion into the education sector in gross disregard to the rights of the minorities.

The meeting, chaired by Major Archbishop of Syro-Malabar Catholic Church Mar George Alenchery, called upon the government not to introduce restrictions in appointments at various Christian educational institutions which played a key role in the State’s reformation process.

The meeting further asked the government to approve all appointments made by the educational institutions in a time-bound manner.

The council said that denial of reservation and other benefits to Dalit Christians was discrimination and denial of the right to freedom of religion assured by the Constitution. It further called upon the churches in Kerala to launch a stir seeking reservation benefits for Dalit Christians too. It expressed concern at the change in attitude towards extra-marital relationship and homosexuality.

Mar Baselius Cleemis, Catholicos of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church, delivered the keynote address. Metropolitan of Mar Thoma Syrian Church of Malabar Joseph Mar Thoma spoke.
