In search of a way out of chaos

June 03, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:44 am IST - PATHANAMTHITTA:

The Central Travancore Management Association (CTMA) has called upon District Collector S. Harikishore and the Superintendent of Police T. Narayanan to address traffic congestion in Thiruvalla town, especially in the backdrop of the inauguration of the KSRTC bus terminal-cum-shopping complex on Saturday.

In a memorandum to the district authorities, CTMA secretary general P.K. Rajeev stressed the grave need to streamline vehicular traffic and auto-taxi parking areas in the town.

The memorandum says all vehicles, except KSRTC buses, from Kottayam side of the MC Road should be diverted from Deepa Junction to TK Road via Chilanka Junction and the Railway Station Road. All KSRTC buses coming from Kottayam side should directly proceed to the new KSRTC bus terminal on the MC Road.

The buses coming from Chengannur side as well as Edathua and Mavelikkara should reach the bus terminal through the MC Road. All buses bound for Thiruvananthapuram, Mavelikara, Edathua, and Kozhencherry should come out of the new bus terminal and proceed through the Railway Station Road, via Deepa Junction and YMCA Junction. No KSRTC bus coming out of the new bus terminal should be permitted to take a turn to SCS Junction.

Vehicles coming from Kattookkara side should be permitted to turn towards Deepa Junction and SCS Junction. The CTMA is of the opinion that permitting vehicles from YMCA Junction to Deepa Junction, via the Railway Station Road, and those from Chilanka Junction to Deepa Junction would only lead to heavy traffic congestion.

Parking arrangements

It further says that parking of private vehicles on either side along the Cross Junction-Deepa Junction stretch of the MC Road and on the YMCA Junction-SCS Junction stretch of the TK Road should be strictly prohibited. The KSRTC complex has parking facility for 300 vehicles. The authorities should make arrangements for vehicle parking near the B1-B1 Road and at the municipal grounds near the private bus stand.

A pragmatic rearrangement of the auto-taxi stands in the town is a must for easing the traffic congestion. Parking of autorickshaws should not be permitted on busy stretches. Auto-taxi parking lots should be earmarked. The CTMA also proposed construction of a ring road around the Thiruvalla town.
