Activists of the Joint Action Committee blocking the National Highway at Payyannur on Wednesday to seek the arrest of those behind the murder of mosque employee Abdul Hakeem.

Road traffic on the National Highway at Payyannur was disrupted for hours as people staged a sit-in on the road in protest against the alleged apathy of the authorities towards the indefinite fast at Payyannur demanding either the arrest of culprits behind the murder of Abdul Hakeem or the handing over of the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation.

The joint action committee had been on an indefinite fast at Payyannur since May 15 in protest against the failure of the police to arrest of people involved in the murder of Hakeem, an employee of a local mosque at Payyannur, whose charred body was found in mysterious circumstances near the madrassa attached to the mosque on February 10 last year.

Traffic disrupted

The road blockade on the highway at Perumba near Payyannur by the action committee led to the disruption of the road traffic as large number of people sat on the road in protest.

Payyannur MLA and CPI(M) leader C. Krishnan inaugurated the road blockade on the National Highway.

Payyannur municipality chairperson K.V. Lalitha, CPI(M) Payyannur area secretary T.I. Madhusoodhanan, action committee leaders K.V. Babu and N. Subramanian and former municipal chairman G.D. Nair were among those who addressed the protestors on the NH.
