Gandhiji the strength and pride of nation: Chandy

September 17, 2011 08:20 pm | Updated 08:20 pm IST - Kozhikode:

Chief Minister Oommen Chandy unveiled a bust of Mahatma Gandhi on the Malabar Christian College campus here on Saturday.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Chandy said Gandhiji was always the strength, pride, and inexhaustible confidence of the country and would continue to be so as long as the nation existed. “We need to turn back to him whenever we fail,” he said.

The Chief Minister also said that negligence of the Gandhian ideas and philosophies was the root cause of all the degenerative tendencies, including the rampant corruption and communal unrest, surfacing in the socio-political arena.

Devasia Devagiri, the sculptor of the bust, was presented with a memento by Mr. Chandy on the occasion. M.K. Raghavan MP, District Collector P.B. Salim, and former minister Benoy Viswom, among others, spoke. College Principal Gladys P. Isaac, who presided over the function, presented the Chief Minister with a memento.
