A major fire broke out at the godown of a stationery shop on High Road in the city on Wednesday. Electrical goods and gift items stored at the godown of Cheruvathur Traders were destroyed in the fire.

Smoke started emanating from the first floor of the godown by 2.10 p.m. Four fire engines from the Thrissur fire station were pressed into action. Fire engines from Mala and Puthukkad stations also reached the site. The fire was doused after an effort of two hours. The gift items were stored in plastic boxes. The smoke bellowing from the burning plastic made the task of the fire force difficult. The extent of damage has not been calculated. The shop belonged to Edizon Cheruvathur of Valarkavu. A short circuit is suspected to be the reason for the fire. A team of 32 firemen led by Additional Division Officer Sujith Kumar participated in the operation. No causality was reported.
