Ezhavas have always stood by the Left, says Kanam

October 07, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:41 am IST - KOLLAM:

Communist Party of India (CPI) State unit secretary Kanam Rajendran has said that the official leadership of the Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana (SNDP) Yogam has always been averse to supporting Communist parties, but the rank and file of the Ezhava community has always stood by the Left parties.

Talking to media persons here on Tuesday, the CPI leader said Sree Narayana Guru was by birth and deed a Communist.

But successive leaderships of the Yogam were never so. When R. Sankar led the organisation the leadership was with the Congress.

It was the Left governments which had always protected the interests of Ezhava community. The ordinary people of that community who were aware of this fact would continue to support the Communists, he said.

Left, not wary

The CPI or the left parties were not in any way wary about the Yogam floating a political party.

‘‘Why should anyone fear something that has neither a programme nor a policy,’’ he said.

The formation of a political outfit of the Yogam was still in suspended animation.

Reaction later

The CPI would declare its reaction after formation of the party, Mr. Rajendran said.

He said the developments taking place on the campus of Sree Kerala Varma College in Thrissur exposed that militant and communal organisations had started growing on campuses.

Congress leader A.K. Antony’s contrition that banning campus politics was a faux pas came a bit too late.

‘‘But Antony is a man who frequently engages in acts of contrition without any qualms,’’ he said.

Warning

Mr. Rajendran also warned that fascism was making serious attempts through the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) to establish itself in the country.

But attempts from some sections to make Kerala toe the communal path would only meet with failure.

Attempts to polarise the State in the name of caste and creed would also meet the same fate, he said.
