Ensure freedom of labour: Viswan

May 04, 2011 08:49 pm | Updated 08:49 pm IST - KOTTAYAM:

Left Democratic Front (LDF) convener Vaikom Viswan has called for ensuring the freedom of labour in the country.

He was inaugurating a farewell meeting organised by the Kerala Panchayat Employees' Association (K.P.E.A.) for its outgoing State president V.V. Thankamani at the P. Krishna Pillai Hall here on Wednesday.

Mr. Viswan said that attempts to rule over the working class were being made in various parts of the country. “Efforts are being made by certain forces to render such societal sections powerless and disrupt organisational activities. In the current scenario, certain leaderships are also attempting to unleash anti-social elements in order to upset the existing social balance and harmony. Such efforts posed many challenges that could threaten the very existence of the working class in the country,” he said.

He highlighted the need for a united fight to counter such negative attempts.

Mr. Viswan presented a memento to Mr. Thankamani for his contributions towards the association.

The meeting was presided over by KPEA State committee vice-president A. Sudhakaran. KPEA general secretary K.R. Rajan welcomed the gathering.

CPI(M) district secretary K.J. Thomas; Travancore Cements chairman V.R. Bhaskaran; Mr. Thankamani; KPEA State vice-president P.T. Usman; Federation of State Employees' and Teachers' Organisations (FSETO) State secretary A. Sreekumar; and FSETO State committee president S. Shajahan spoke.
