Following research under the aegis of the Department of Botany of Sanatana Dharma (SD) College, Alappuzha, 11 more accessions of plant growth promoting rhizobacteria from the acidic paddy fields of Kuttanad have been deposited with the GenBank.
The research was conducted by students Sreekala C.G. and Surabhi Sanker under the guidance of C. Dileep, head of the Department of Botany.
Numbers allotted
Mr. Dileep said that the National Centre for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) in the United States had accepted the submissions and allotted accession numbers.
“All the organisms are herbicide (Glyphosate) resistant plant growth promoting Rhizobacteria belonging to Pseudomonas aeruginosa, isolated from the acidic paddy fields of Kuttand,” Mr. Dileep said.
The gene sequencing of these micro-organisms was carried out at the Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology, Thiruvananthapuram.
In 2015, two strains of similar bacteria were deposited at GenBank from the same laboratory.
Earlier, their findings received the K.S. Bilgrami award for best paper and poster presentation at the Indian Society of Mycology and Plant Pathology conference held in Kanpur last year.
