Electric buses, cricket stadium for Thrissur

Budget also features new bus stands, multilevel parking

Thrissur City Corporation’s budget for 2019-20 has offered hope for fast development of the city. The budget, which was presented by Deputy Mayor P. Rafy Jose, proposed to give a facelift for the city with a slew of development projects.

It envisaged a revenue of ₹710.57 crore and expenditure of ₹676.21 crore.

New bus stands will be built at Puzhakkal and Ollukkara. An amount of ₹1 crore has been earmarked for a modern multilevel parking in the city. Two electric buses will be operated in the city with the support of the government. The Corporation signed an MoU with ANERT for a charging station for electric vehicles.

Interlocking tiles will be paved at 10 junctions. A new cricket stadium will come up in the city. A shopping complex will come at Chembukkavu.

Four small hydro-electric projects will be launched in the city. Kannamkuzhy (10 mw); Averkutty (10 mw); Ettyani (2.5 mw); and Kanjirakolly (3 mw) are the proposed projects. The Corporation will produce five megawatt solar power. Online payment system will be established for power bill payment.

The EMS open-air theatre, under construction on Pattalam Road, will be opened for functions this year. A statue of EMS and a city square will be built there in the second phase. All programmes being held in front of the Corporation office will be shifted to the EMS open theatre.

Day-care centres

Day-care centres for the elderly will be opened in three divisions of the Corporation. The objective is to make Thrissur an elderly-friendly city. The Corporation has reduced tax for buildings of up to 1,500 sq ft. The water charge was also reduced by 10%. Steps have been initiated to get technical sanction for a flyover at West Fort. The Corporation has earmarked funds for a flyover at East Fort. Government sanction has been received for a flyover at Kokkale.

A modern Corporation office will be set up at Sakthan Nagar. The civic body has also envisaged a modern fish-meat-vegetable market.

The place in between Asoka Hotel and the Sakthan bus stand will be developed as a fish-meat-vegetable market and shopping complex. Sakthan Nagar development works will include flyovers, road development, and bus stand modification.

The budget also offered a convention centre with international standards.

The electric buses will operate from the Sakthan bus stand. A modern foot-overbridge will come up at Sakthan Nagar. A sky-walk connecting all roads will also come up at Shakthan Nagar.

An amount of ₹40 crore has been earmarked for the Tagore Centenary Hall.

An amount of ₹100 crore has been allocated for road development. Multilevel parking will come up at Kolothumpadam.
