: The major tourism destinations in the district will soon have permanent stages for cultural programmes. District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) officials said that cultural programmes would be promoted by giving preference to artistes from the district. Tourism destinations such as Adyanpara, Padinjarekkara, Karuvarakundu, Kottakkunnu and Nilayoram Park have been identified to set up permanent venues for display of art and culture.
The DTPC has chalked out a project to provide artistes opportunities to present their talents at least once a month. Priority will be given to those who register their names in advance. A collective of ghazal singers will be formed in the initial phase, said DTPC secretary V. Ummer Koya.
Mr. Koya said that Malappuram cherished a unique tradition of encouraging ghazals and Hindustani music. “We are trying to revive those splendid times when the people used to enjoy this kind of music,” he said.
The formation of the singers collective will take place in the first week of November. Those wishing to be part of the collective should contact the DTPC at 0483- 2731504 before October 20, said DTPC officials here on Tuesday.
