Double murder: Life term for migrant worker

The Thrissur Additional District Sessions Court on Tuesday sentenced a man to life imprisonment for murdering a woman and her daughter at Thoyakkavu in the district in 2015.

Additional District Sessions Court Judge Nizzar Ahmed awarded life imprisonment and a fine of ₹1 lakh for the double murder and 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of ₹50,000 for setting ablaze the house of the victims to Sojibul Ali Mandal, 26, from West Bengal .

The murder happened on April 7, 2015, when Sojibul entered the house of the victims in the early hours of the day. He then set ablaze Kunjipathu, wife of Puthuvacholayil Mohammed, and her daughter Seenath, who were asleep in the house after dousing them with petrol.

The family had rejected his proposal for marrying Seenath. He was a construction worker in the neighbourhood. While Kunjipathu died on the spot, Seenath succumbed to burns in the hospital .

Kozhikode Assistant Police Commissioner Sudharshan, who was the then Guruvayur CI, investigated the case. There was no eye witnesses in the case.

Public Prosecutor P. Sunil and advocates Ramsin and Amir appeared for the prosecution.
