District works overtime to build breakwater facilities

June 25, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:39 am IST - ALAPPUZHA:

District administration is taking measures to expedite works on constructing breakwater facility at seven locations along the coast. Three breakwater units have already been constructed under a scheme aided by Nabard.

Two breakwater structures at Purakkad and one at Thrikkunnapuzha have been completed, Irrigation department officials said.

Government sanction has been sought for additional funds for the work to curb sea erosion along the coast.

Officials said works worth Rs.8 crore would be initiated soon.

One of the hurdles faced by the officials is the shortage of granite stones. The proposed works under the emergency plan requires about 500 loads of stones.

The stones have to be procured from quarries in Ernakulam and Kollam. Indecision on working of quarries has resulted in delay in getting granite.

Consequently, several contractors had abandoned works.

The administration is trying to get the works done as soon as possible, officials said.

The coastal area had been witnessing protests during the past few days over non-rehabilitation of those affected by sea erosion.

BJP activists took out a rally at Purakkad and forcibly entered government land at Manakkal on Tuesday. They set up huts in a symbolic protest to highlight the non-rehabilitation issue.

Meanwhile, the authorities have initiated measures to rehabilitate the affected families at Thottapally.

About 30 families are expected to be rehabilitated there as per a plan chalked out during the mass contact programme of the Chief Minister, held here recently.

One of the hurdles faced by the officials is the shortage of granite stones. The proposed works under the emergency plan requires about 500 loads of stones.
