Institutions and agencies should take the responsibility of creating awareness of child rights, Governor P. Sathasivam has said.

Inaugurating a State-level function of Child Rights Week observance organised by the Child Rights Protection Council at Thodupuzha on Sunday, the Governor said there was wide disparity in respect of child rights protection between children living in rural and urban areas.

Better opportunities

Those sidelined, differently abled and children in tribal communities should be given attention in this regard, he said. The Social Justice Department should give priority on providing better opportunities to children who are living in backward areas. The institutions concerned and people’s representatives should provide more funds to uplift the underprivileged children, he said.

The Governor said educational institutions should not deny the rights of children. There should be clean toilets in schools each for 40 male and female students. Though the State has moved ahead in this direction, it has not been completely achieved.

He said that as per the data of the Crime Records Bureau, Kerala was second with regard to sexual atrocities on children.

They should be sensitised to achieving equal rights irrespective of sex at the younger ages.

Electricity Minister M.M. Mani presided over the function.
