CPI(M) State secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan on Thursday informed that his party would conduct a mega pre-monsoon cleanliness drive across the State on May 24.

Workers under each branch committee would take up the pre-monsoon cleaning activities in their respective regions to avoid spread of epidemics and other waterborne diseases.

Disclosing details of the party State committee meeting held in Thiruvananthapuram on Wednesday, Mr. Kodiyeri said the branch committees would collect and disposes off plastic and other solid waste to avoid health risks. He also urged the State government to initiate immediate measures to prevent spread of monsoon diseases. He offered the party’s cooperation in proper waste management.

He said the party committee had decided to float red volunteer groups under each local committee involving youths aged between 18 and 30. They would be provided training in fitness, martial arts and sports activities.

Cooperation of youth clubs would be sought in this regard. The groups to be started with police permission will engage in charity and rescue operations, he said. The party would ensure selling of pesticide-free vegetables in at least 1,000 centres across the State during the Onam festival time, he said.
