Music and politics have always been inseparable. And it is to music that the State unit of the Congress has turned to ensure that party president Rahul Gandhi coasts to victory in Wayanad.
With just over a week left for polls, the Congress has brought out an election song. At the request of Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala, composer Kailas Menon, singer K.S. Harishankar, and lyricist Manu Manjith have teamed up to create a song that Kailas says is nothing like a conventional election song.
‘Varavaye porattathin neram veendum, ethirilla therottathil cheram kooode
Wayanadin nenchinde midippinte thalamayi mari nee
Matha jathi bhethangal chollidum
pekkoottam cherumbol
Ee nadin kavalkaran neeyalle ...’
The song touches upon issues that the party feels have a bearing on politics today. Divisiveness, encroachment on freedom of the citizens, problems of farmers and the youth, unemployment... all find mention in the song which ends with a call welcoming Rahul Gandhi and how he is what the country has been looking for to take it to greater heights.
Kailas says unlike the typical election songs which are meant only as a motivational tool, the song for Mr. Gandhi will endear itself to voters for its musical quality too.
Harishankar, Kailas says, is a versatile singer and well suited to the high-energy track.
The Congress has more musical fare lined up to grab voter attention. A week ago, the Congress publicity committee released a video based on writer and critic M. Leelavathy’s poem on Rahul Gandhi.
The writer says the poem is an expression of her respect for Mr. Gandhi who had invited her to contest to Parliament from Thrissur or Mukundapuram. She did not take up his offer then.
