Coast Guard urged not to ill-treat fishermen

June 03, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:58 am IST - ALAPPUZHA:

Dheevara Sabha general secretary V. Dinakaran has demanded that the Union government ask the Coast Guard to desist from ill-treating fishermen. Foreign vessels undertaking fishing operations within 200 nautical miles should be seized during the 61-day trawling ban period, he said.

Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, he said fishermen from Kerala will continue fishing as usual since the government has permitted foreign vessels to operate during the trawl ban. “If trawling ban is imposed as per Central government rules, it will imperil the lives of seven lakh fishermen and families in Kerala,” he said.

The Union government should enable fishermen to fish up to 50 nautical miles, he said.
