In view of the rising number of cases of online banking fraud, the Thiruvananthapuram City police have issued yet another advisory, cautioning the public to remain guarded.
The police discourage the public from sharing one-time passwords (OTPs) with fraudsters who contact debit or credit card users claiming that their cards have expired; or that they were eligible to redeem certain ‘reward points’; or that they were yet to link their Aadhaar to bank accounts.
After obtaining the user’s account details and date of birth, the fraudster would request them to reveal the OTP number that has been issued for conducting a transaction. The fraudsters would then transfer the stolen money to various e-wallets before withdrawing them through bank accounts created by submitting false personal details.

District Police Chief (Thiruvananthapuram City) P. Prakash also urged those who frequently made purchases through e-commerce sites. Besides, those transacting through mobile applications have been advised against using unfamiliar applications.
Those who have found money being withdrawn from their accounts without their knowledge have been requested to get in touch with the respective bank immediately to get the particular card blocked. Besides, a complaint must also be submitted at the respective district cyber cell without much delay.
