January 12, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 06:00 am IST - KOTTAYAM:

Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has stressed the need for the strict implementation of road safety laws. He was inaugurating the State-level observance of Road Safety Week held here on Sunday.

Mr. Chandy said the government would enhance the financial allocation for the Police, Transport and Motor vehicles Departments for the effective implementation of road safety laws.

In his presidential address, Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, Minister for Transport, said the government was seriously thinking of introducing a certification system through star rating for the vehicles as part of strengthening road safety measures. Establishment of an academy to provide training for drivers is also on the anvil. However, one of the crucial component in safe travel was the condition of the road, he pointed out.

The Chief Minister flagged off the road show being taken out as part of the road safety awareness campaign. State Road Safety Commissioner R. Sreelekha, Deputy Transport Commissioner E.S. James, Kottayam municipal chairman KRG Warrier and others spoke on the occasion.
