District Collector T. Bhaskaran has warned political parties and candidates against resorting to campaigns hurting the caste, religious or linguistic sentiments of communities.

‘‘Such acts can invoke a punishment of three years in jail and a fine of Rs.10,000,’’ he said here on Wednesday. Offenders would be punished under Section 121 of Kerala Panchayat Raj Act and Section 145 of Kerala Municipality Act.

Mr. Bhaskaran asked political parties and their campaigners not to resort to personal vendetta during electioneering. Permission should be obtained for public announcement systems and use of vehicles for campaigning.

The permission for public announcement system could be obtained from respective police stations and for vehicle campaign from the District Collector.
