A team of experts attached to the Public Works Department inspected the concrete bridge across the Pampa river at Kozhencherry on Thursday, following reports that a small crack had developed on the well foundation of its second pier from the Maramon side.

Aranmula MLA Veena George, who accompanied the team, said the PWD experts had not suggested traffic regulation on the bridge. According to the expert team, the crack in the well foundation of the bridge, commissioned in 1948, was due to ageing and had nothing to do with the recent flood, said Ms. George.

Not serious

The experts said the bridge foundation was strong and the concrete structure, intact. The pier above the well foundation too was strong and stable and hence the crack had not affected the strength of the bridge.

Ms. George said the PWD team would submit a detailed inspection report to Public Works Minister G. Sudhakaran soon. She said the PWD would construct a footbridge too on the eastern side of the bridge. The team was of the view that the crack is a minor one and not of a serious nature, she said.

Hygiene Albert, Manomohan, Chief Engineers; Viswaprakash, Superintending Engineer; Saju, R. Anilkumar, Executive Engineers, and B. Binu, Assistant Executive Engineer, were part of the expert team.
