The Communist Party of India ‘(CPI) organ, ‘Janayugam Rasthriya Varika,’ was launched in Kollam in 1949 and N. Gopinathan Nair was its founder editor.
Fondly called ‘Janayugam’ Gopi, he later became the Chief Editor of ‘Janayugam’ daily and held that post till 1962 after making it the newspaper with the third largest circulation in Kerala.
Gopi, who left for Delhi to join the ‘Patriot’ and retired from the United News of India, had settled down in Thirvananthapuram. He passed away in June 1991. His wife, Saradamoni, later authored a book on the life and times of ‘Janayugam’ Gopi. The book titled ‘Janayugam Gopiye Orkumbol’ was launched in June 2012.
At a press conference here on Tuesday, Gopi’s daughter G. Asha said the book has a nostalgic description of Kollam during the days when the Communist movement was getting popular in erstwhile Travancore.
The book also contains some historically important photographs. Ms. Asha said she would showcase the book at the Kollam Book Festival, which begins here on Wednesday.
