Thiruvananthapuram:
The Bharathiya Janata Party (BJP) has called for a State-wide protest on Saturday after unidentified persons threw stones at the motorcade of Thushar Vellapally, the candidate of the National Democratic Alliance in Wayanad on Thursday.
The police said the stoning occurred at Kalikavu near Vandoor in Malappuram district and they were yet to identify the miscreants. None were injured in the pelting of stones. However, the windscreen of a vehicle was damaged.
BJP State president P. Sreedharan Pillai blamed workers of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) and Congress for the attack on Mr Thushar, who is also the vice president of the SNDP.
He urged party workers to organise protests across Kerala on Saturday against what he described as a "mob attack".
The police said they had taken precautions to curb potential incidents of violence in the wake of the BJP's Statewide protest call. Any event related to Wayanad has a bearing on national politics given Congress president Rahul Gandhi's candidature from the mostly forested Parliamentary segment where an active Maoist presence has complicated the security scenario.
