The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has triggered the beef row through the Sangh Parivar to use it as a tool for political gains, KPCC vice president M.M. Hassan has said.

Quoting statistics in Kollam on Sunday, Mr. Hassan said that the country produces about 40 crore tonnes of beef every year, both for domestic consumption and export.

Consumption

“The 17-crore Muslim population of the country consumes only a portion of that.”

Mr. Hassan said this while inaugurating a meeting on Saturday at the Pathanapuram Gandhi Bhavan to commemorate the 11th death anniversary of freedom fighter and Congress leader A. Pachan who was also a crusader of the rights of Dalits.

He said more important than reservation was the approach of the government towards the Dalits.

‘Barbaric’

“Murdering Dalits in the name of communal hatred by setting them ablaze is cruelty at its barbaric heights.”
