Baby reminds partymen of ‘worst-ever poll setback’

January 17, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 06:12 am IST - KOTTAYAM:

The district meet of the CPI(M) began here on an introspective mood with M.A. Baby, Polit Bureau member who inaugurated the delegates session, reminding the delegates of the worst-ever setback the party had suffered in the last general elections.

“In Kerala we could boast of doubling our strength from the four to eight MPs. But it is a fact that we have not been able to put in our best efforts, in which case the outcome would have been much better,” he said. “We should not forget that the party reached a two-figure number in the Parliament only with the help of the two independents we had fielded,” he said.

In West Bengal

The biggest setback was in West Bengal, Mr. Baby said, and added that the last general elections saw the biggest reversals for the Left movement in the country. Mr. Baby said the district meetings would discuss the reasons for this loss in popular appeal. Mounting a scathing attack on the UDF government in the State, Mr. Baby said for the first time in the history of the State a Chief Minister had been termed not only a protector of criminals, but also a participant in criminal acts. The Finance Minister has been accused of taking bribes, but there had been no action against him. “How can we expect the investigations to be impartial when the Chief Minister and the Finance Minister continue to hold on to power?” he asked.

He said the nation was passing through unprecedented times under Narendra Modi as Prime Minister. He called upon the party members to be cautious about the spread of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) whom he dubbed “not only extra Constitutional, but also anti Constitutional”.
