The Thalassery police arrested two CPI(M) workers in a case of attempt to murder former party worker C.O.T. Nazeer, who had contested as an Independent from the Vadakara Lok Sabha constituency.

The arrested have been identified as V.K. Sojith and K. Ashwanth, natives of Kolassery and Ponnia, suburbs of Thalassery. The police said they were arrested after examining the CCTV footage and other evidence. The police said Ashwanth had direct involvement in the murder attempt.

The police had registered cases against three persons following the attack on May 18 on Kayyath Road at Thalassery. Nazeer has been admitted in a hospital in Kozhikode.

The CPI(M) had denied any involvement in the attack. CPI(M) leaders, including P. Jayarajan and M.V. Jayarajan, had visited him in the hospital. But Nazeer, who is a former municipal councillor at Thalassery, had said that he was targeted by party workers.

More arrests are likely in the case, the police said. The arrested were sent in judicial remand for 14 days.
