Athulyam Aksharotsavam today

The Athulyam Aksharotsavam, the second-phase Class IV equivalency examination organised by the State Literacy Mission, will be held at 700 centres in Wayanad district on Sunday.

Addressing a press conference here on Saturday, Wayanad district panchayat president N.K. Rasheed, who is also the chairman of the District Literacy Mission, said that 15,000 learners, including 10,232 women, will appear for the examination under the Athulyam literacy programme. The first phase of the examination was conducted in three selected gram panchayats in 2011.

As many as 3,774 learners, including 1,642 women, appeared for the exam and 3,209 passed, Mr. Rasheed said. According to a recent family survey organised by the mission, 21,709 persons in the district, including 13,039 women, were yet to complete basic education, of which 12,030 persons belong to the Scheduled Tribes and 1,408, to the Scheduled Tribes. The mission had appointed 700 instructors to provide special coaching.
