The Kerala State Human Rights Commission has pulled up the Medical College police here for producing in court a woman suspected of theft, concealing information about her nine-month-old twin children.
Asking the District Police Chief to submit a report in three months about the incident, acting chairperson P. Mohanadas on Tuesday said had the court been told of the children, she could have been released on bail and the children could have been taken care of.
Jaya, a resident of Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu, was arrested on Monday morning in connection with a theft at the house of a retired police official three years ago. She was arrested by the personnel of the Medical College police while her children were being taken to the Government Hospital, Tirur, Malappuram, for treatment of fever.
The personnel handed over a note with the phone number of the police station to Manickam, her husband. Clueless about the whole episode, he boarded a train and reached the Kozhikode railway station.
It was the loading and unloading workers who informed Childline activists when they found him crying on the premises without knowing where to go.
Meanwhile, Railway Protection Force personnel too reached the spot and took them to the station. The details of the arrest emerged when an RPF inspector contacted the police station.
As the court was not aware of her children, it had remanded her in police custody. The children were sent to the child protection unit. Manickam and Jaya are engaged in cleaning of septic tanks.
