Janani Suraksha Express on the anvil

The Department of Health will soon begin operating an ambulance service Janani Suraksha Express exclusively aimed at taking pregnant women to hospital for childbirth.

As many as 287 ambulances will be pressed into service for the purpose, Minister for Health V.S. Sivakumar said. The service will be provided to take pregnant women to government hospitals and also for their return journey, Mr. Sivakumar said. He was inaugurating a newly constructed laboratory, operation theatre, and X-ray unit, set up at a cost of Rs.2 crore, at government hospital, Vaikom.

The Minister also laid the foundation stone for a proposed clinic for women and children, being constructed at a cost of Rs.8.9 crore. — Special Correspondent
