Alappuzha tops in MGNREGS work

The district also leads in executing projects

Alappuzha has become the best performing district in the State in terms of providing employment and executing projects under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS).

According to statistics, the district generated a whopping 69,98,896 persondays under the scheme so far in 2018-19 (till December 14, 2018).

It has already exceeded the target of 47.83 lakh persondays for 2018-19.

Second spot

Thiruvananthapuram district is in the second place with 61.72 lakh workdays so far. Palakkad and Kozhikode generated 55.22 lakh and 53.48 lakh persondays respectively.

Of the 1.69 lakh households in the district with active job cards, 1.37 lakh households got job under the scheme so far.

The average days of employment given to a household stood at 50.93%. A total of 4,529 families have completed the maximum 100 workdays.

“The work under MGNREGS had come to a standstill during floods. But despite all adversities, the district has made good progress. Besides, generating workdays, we have spent ₹190.15 crore in wages,” MGNREGS Joint Programme Coordinator N. Vinodini said.

Post-flood rebuilding

Ms. Vinodini said that the district was leading in the State in completing the projects under the scheme.

“Of the work undertaken, 99% have been completed. Alappuzha is leading in the construction of anganwadis, ponds and compost pits. The workers under the scheme are actively participating in the post-flood reconstruction process. We are operating a number of brick-making units and providing bricks for construction of houses under the LIFE Mission. In Kuttanad, we will construct cattle sheds for dairy farmers. We will continue with our efforts to rejuvenate various water resources. The survey and detailed study for the revival of the Alappuzha-Cherthala canal will be completed this year.”

Saplings

She said that 17 lakh saplings would be produced in the district under the MGNREGS for planting on June 5, 2019 in connection with the world Environment Day.

In the district, the most number of persondays have been generated by Pattanakkad, Bharanikavu and Ambalapuzha blocks.

At panchayat-level, Thuravoor, Arattupuzha and Purakkad have generated most workdays.

A total of 582 families have completed 100 workdays in Muhamma panchayat, giving it the top spot in the district and second place in the State in the category.

Of the 750 households belonging to the Scheduled Tribes category with job cards, 544 families got employment under the scheme.

So far this fiscal, 5.50 crore persondays have been generated in the State under the scheme.
