Kodikunnil Suresh, MP, has said that the Alappuzha district has performed well under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme. He was addressing the District Vigilance and Monitoring committee meeting here on Saturday.
Road works, strengthening of field bunds, and protection of water tanks were among the works executed under the programme. The scheme needed to be expanded by including more categories of works. Drinking water projects being taken up in the district required priority consideration, he said.
Under the rural employment guarantee scheme in 12 block panchayats, an amount of Rs. 44 crore has been spent during the first three months of the current financial year. About 68,000 families came under the programme.
During 2014-15, as many as 2,41,277 families were registered under the scheme. Of these, job cards were given to 2,37,837 people and employment was provided to 1,25,510 families.
