A new red army, for rescue and relief

May 08, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:49 am IST - KANNUR:

The first batch of the newly formed Red Volunteer Force (RVF), mobilised by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] with the claimed objective of offering voluntary services including rescue and relief and first aid, will march through this town on May 29.

Announcing this, CPI(M) district secretary P. Jayarajan said the volunteers in the force were trained in first aid treatment, rescue operation, and other activities meant to assist and serve the people. They will also be given physical training, he added.

Young force

Mr. Jayarajan said young people in the age group of 18-30 would be recruited in the force.

The local-level training of the volunteers will begin on May 10.

While young men are being trained in the first phase, women volunteers will be trained in the next, he said.

The services of volunteers will be extended to the public as and when required, on occasions such as marriages and funerals and other contingency situations, he announced.

The force was being formed as part of a State-level decision by the CPI(M), Mr. Jayarajan said.

Referring to adverse media reports on the voluntary force, he described as baseless the reports in a section of the media that the force was being constituted as a defence force against the activities of communal forces.

Referring to reports that the volunteers in the force would carry sticks, the CPI(M) district secretary said red volunteers had carried sticks while marching on the occasion of the party district conference at Koothuparamba.
