The third place in the Formula Hybrid international competition, an annual spring tradition held at New Hampshire Motor Speedway (NHMS) in Loudon, U.S. during the first week of May, was won by a team of students from the B.Tech. Electrical and Electronics Engineering department of the Amrita School of Engineering, Kollam.
The event is founded and run by the Thayer School of Engineering, Dartmouth, since 2006.
This year’s competition featured high-performance hybrid and electric race cars built by teams of undergraduate and graduate engineering students.
A total of 28 teams from colleges and universities around the globe competed, including the competition’s first all-female team from the Rochester Institute of Technology.
The competitors had to collaboratively design and build a formula-style electric or plug-in hybrid race car and compete in a series of events. This educational competition emphasised innovation and fuel efficiency in a high-performance application.
The technology developed during the 10-year run at NHMS could be found in the cars and trucks we drive today, the competitors claimed.
The students compete in aspects of design, acceleration, handling and endurance of their vehicle and abide by a list of rules that minimise risk while preserving the students’ freedom to innovate.
They are also faced with the challenge of optimising both energy efficiency and sustainability of materials used in their cars providing students with a uniquely challenging experiential learning experience.
The team from the Amrita School of Engineering was named Agraganya.
