Tribals take possession of land

September 19, 2010 07:48 pm | Updated 09:04 pm IST - NALLASINGHA (ATTAPPADY):

Tribespeople under the banner of the Attappady Samrakashana Samithy on Sunday set up huts on the land allegedly usurped by windmill companies using fabricated land documents in seven places of Nallasingha in Kottathara village of Attappady, in Palakkad.

As many as 32 tribal families had lost over 149.5 acres in survey numbers 1275, 1273, 1274 and 1272 in Kottathara village.

The tribespeople took possession of nearly 70 acres on the day and said they had started living there to reclaim their land.

The local leaders of the Socialist Janata Democratic Party, led by M.P. Veerendrakumar, were present.

The agitation will go on till we get our land back, samithy president M. Sukumaran said here. We waited for long before starting the agitation. Many inquiry commissions appointed by the government had submitted their reports indicating illegal occupation of land by various interest groups. The government had not taken any action on these reports, he said.
