A trainee of the Sports Authority of India-owned Lakshmibai National College of Physical Education (LNCPE), Kariyavattom, attempted suicide by slitting his vein on Wednesday.
A medallist at the last national youth athletic meet, the 17-year-old was rushed to the Medical College Hospital here around 6 a.m. after fellow students found blood gushing out of the boy’s hand. Doctors put three stitches on the wound and referred the boy to the psychiatry ward but those accompanying him took him back to the college, without obtaining a discharge, sources said.
Probe is on: principalCollege authorities tried to play down the incident saying the boy was now under the care of the sports psychologist of the institution.
Speaking to The Hindu , LNCPE principal G. Kishore said the boy took the step due to stress and a three-member committee was probing the incident.
No case registeredThe Circle Inspector, Kazhakkootam sub-division, K.S. Arun, said no case was being registered since there were no complaints and in accordance with the directions of the Supreme Court regarding similar incidents.
The incident comes close on the heels of four students attempting suicide at the SAI-run Water Sports Academy in Alappuzha last month alleging ill-treatment by senior students.
