Pulse polio drive begins today

The first phase of this year’s pulse polio drive in the district will be inaugurated by Valsa Chacko, President, district panchayat at the Municipal bus stand here at 8 a.m. on Sunday .

The Health Department has made elaborate arrangements for the Pulse Polio Immunisation Programme to be held on January 10 and February 7, Dr. K.C. Preetha District Medical Officer told The Hindu .

The programme is organised by the health department in association with the local administrative bodies, other government departments and NGOs in the district, she said. The programme aimed at eradicating polio by administering vaccine to all children below the age of five years on the same day, she added.

As many as 1,662 trained volunteers will administer the vaccine to 68136 children in the district. 835 pulse polio booths and 27 mobile teams had been set up in the district for the immunisation programme. There will also be 12 transit units in the district.

The transit units will be deployed at the tourist spots and the bus stands in the district .As many as 84 vehicles are being pressed into service for the programme.

The transit booths would be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and other booths would be open from 8 a.m to 5 p.m.
